Johnny Depp has been facing a variety of issues following his legal entanglements with ex-wife Amber Heard. This apparently now includes the once-celebrated actor being boycotted by Hollywood. Aside from losing a variety of iconic roles, Johnny Depp has also had his latest movie – Minamata – seemingly held back in the US by MGM. According to Johnny Depp, this is the result of being boycotted by Hollywood.
As he explained in an interview over Minamata with The Sunday Times:
“We looked these people in the eyeballs and promised we would not be exploitative. That the film would be respectful. I believe that we’ve kept our end of the bargain, but those who came in later should also maintain theirs. Some films touch people. And this affects those in Minamata and people who experience similar things. And for anything… For Hollywood’s boycott of me? One man, one actor in an unpleasant and messy situation, over the last number of years? But, you know, I’m moving towards where I need to go to make all that… To bring things to light.”
It’s interesting to see Johnny Depp acknowledge that Hollywood has apparently boycotted him. It’s even more interesting, however, that Johnny Depp is so upset about the film project being held back. It’s clear he’s passionate about it and the story that he’s attempted to tell alongside the rest of the cast and crew. As such, it’s unfortunate to see the film apparently be used as a pawn in this overall legal entanglement between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.
In the meantime, Johnny Depp has been seeing some brighter circumstances – including the opportunity to receive the Donostia Award. So depending on how his legal issues with Amber Heard continue, he could see a much more optimistic future. And this of course means that Hollywood will have hopefully stopped boycotting him and his current projects if everything works in his favor. As such, stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates as we have them.
