Supernatural finally concluded its lengthy run last year, well over a decade after the series first premiered in 2005. With that in mind, it appears The CW isn’t wasting any time with keeping the brand alive. In fact, it’s been revealed that The CW is currently developing a Supernatural prequel series. The series is being appropriately titled “The Winchesters,” with the focus being on John and Mary Winchester – the two parents of Sam and Dean from Supernatural. In an interesting twist, Dean Winchester actor Jensen Ackles will be involved with the prequel series as a narrator.
As revealed via Deadline:
“Before Sam and Dean, there was John and Mary. Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), The Winchesters is the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.”
They further elaborated the history of John and Mary Winchester as shown in the hit series Supernatural:
“John and Mary were played on the show by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith. Mary was killed by a demon when Sam was still a baby. Investigating her death, John becomes a hunter and then passes on his knowledge and skills to his sons. John was a recurring character in the first season and died in the Season 2 premiere.”
The prequel series is being written and executive produced via Supernatural executive producer Robbie Thompson. What’s more, Jensen Ackles will also be involved with the series as an executive producer. This is definitely an interesting concept, and one that was mostly unexpected by fans. While attempts at Supernatural spin-offs were made in the past, they never quite took off. As such, it’ll be interesting to see how The Winchesters develops further – and how exactly the series will impact the world of Supernatural.
