With the upcoming sequel to the successful 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in development, fans are excited to learn who our new cast of characters will be. According to a new announcement, it’s just been revealed that actress Issa Rae will be joining the team as Spider-Woman. She’ll be uniting with two of the previous Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse cast members, Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld, who played Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, respectively. As such, this should definitely make for an interesting blend of both old and new.
This is definitely an interesting character inclusion, as revealed via THR. Spider-Woman, aka Jessica Drew, has always been an underused part of Marvel adaptations in recent years – so seeing the Spider-Verse franchise take advantage of her character will be a pleasant surprise. It’ll also be interesting to see what other characters or even locations they could use in the upcoming film. Especially considering Jessica Drew’s character previously grew up at Wundagore Mountain.

The fictional location was a massive part of Spider-Woman’s original origin story, in which her parents used mines from the mountain to acquire uranium. Unfortunately, Jessica Drew is poisoned, and with an experimental curse using spider blood – she is gifted the powers that allow her to become Spider-Woman.
It’s a nicely different origin story than the traditional Peter Parker tale, and it could give a new perspective to the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel. Of course, we’ll just have to wait and see how it will pan out. In any case, we still get to look forward to Issa Rae and her take as Spider-Woman – so stay tuned for more details on those fronts as we have them.
The Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson. Meanwhile, Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be credited as writers on the project alongside David Callaham. It should also be noted that the film will be produced by Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg. The film will be executive produced by original Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey as well as Aditya Sood.
Audiences will be able to see the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel on October 7, 2022.
