Not long ago, Marvel Studios put out a sizzle reel of their upcoming Phase 4 films for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as theaters begin to re-open and the world returns to some semblance of normal. We got clips of many of the films that were already meant to to be released before the shut down, like Black Widow, Shang-Chi, etc. We also got our very first look at Eternals, albeit very briefly. But now, Marvel has released the first teaser trailer for the film, and it looks like it will be well worth the wait!
The film, which will spans thousands of years, showcases our immortal heroes throughout the history of mankind. They have been there every step of the way, but have never interfered. However, after the events of the Infinity Saga, it looks like it is time for Earth to know who the Eternals are and for the heroes to step in and step up. Director Chloe Zhao brings us an epic and beautiful aesthetic as Angelina Jolie, Selma Hayek, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, and the rest look absolutely amazing! We see the Eternals watching humanity over time as Hayek’s Ajak gives us a voiceover talking about how these heroes have walked amongst history, watching as humans have gone onto extraordinary things.
The teaser trailer is short, and while no real action is seen, this trailer does show us our heroes throughout time. We see that the love between Ikaris and Sersi has lasted for ages. We get a very brief glimpse at Kit Harrington as Danny Whitman, aka Black Knight, who could throw a bit of a wrench in that millennia long relationship. Not much is shown of their powers, either, except for a few quick glimpses, like Sersi creating water in a desolate farm and Makkari saving someone from a falling pillar with their super speed. We also get glimpses of their other worldly technology and their royal-like costumes. However, the family dynamic is prevalent throughout the teaser, shown especially in the final scene where they all sit together for dinner and the question is posed as to who will lead the Avengers now that Captain America and Iron Man are both gone. Ikaris proudly states that he could lead them, all before the rest of the Eternals laugh at the notion in warm hearted jest.
All in all, this teaser looks incredible and sets up what is sure to be an amazing film coming this fall. While it will be a whole year after its initial release date, Eternals looks to be an epic movie that brings a whole new side to the MCU like never before. The all star cast and the grandiose nature of the flick will be like nothing we have seen before, as well as introducing these obscure characters in a way akin to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014.
