Although The Addams Family has been seeing success as an all-new series of animated films for children, a darker adaptation is also on the way. Interestingly, this project will come from director Tim Burton, and it’s intended to specifically focus on Wednesday Addams as a type of coming-of-age tale. Obviously there are some big shoes to fill when it comes to Wednesday Addams, and it seems like the creative individuals involved have found an excellent pick. According to a new announcement, actress Jenna Ortega is now attached to the titular role in the upcoming series Wednesday.
The character has been brought to life by a wide variety of actresses over the years. This includes Lisa Loring throughout the original television series, Christina Ricci in the beloved 1990’s films, and Chloë Grace Moretz who voiced the character in the aforementioned animated projects. As such, it’s exciting to see what Jenna Ortega will be able to offer the character. But with Tim Burton at the helm, it’s guaranteed to be an appropriately spooky and kooky take on the iconic characters. In fact, this interpretation of Wednesday has been described as “a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy.”
As shown below, via Bloody-Disgusting, here is Jenna Ortega holding up a script for Wednesday.
As for the plot of the upcoming Netflix series…
“Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships.”
While Tim Burton is going to be directing the new series, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar will be writing and showrunning the project. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates on the Addams Family adaptation, especially now that casting is in process.
