Although killer shark movies haven’t really died down in popularity, it’s usually rare to see them released on the big screen. As such, it was a massive surprise to see The Meg – a movie about a massive prehistoric-sized shark – get the massive blockbuster treatment. And, luckily, it worked out for the film. The Meg actually managed to earn $530 million worldwide. With numbers like those, a sequel was quickly announced, and it too is intended to appear on the big screen. Although fans have since been wondering when exactly The Meg 2 which is intended to once again star Jason Statham would be released.
Now, while speaking with Collider, Jason Statham gave some updates on the upcoming sequel to The Meg. While he couldn’t reveal too much, he did emphasize that development on the project is ongoing and they intend to shoot early next year. Here’s what actor Jason Statham specifically had to say about shooting The Meg 2:
“We’re gonna start shooting in January, if I get my dates right. Ben Wheatley is the director, I’m very excited to work with him. I’m thrilled to get going, it’s been a while. We’ve been waiting around for the right scripts to come in and the right director to turn up, and we’ve got all those things and they’re all stacked up now. Yeah Wheatley’s great. We have a great shorthand already. We’ve got similar taste. I like his movies, I think he’s a brilliant director. I think we’ve got a good shot at making something good.”
It certainly sounds like this movie is shaping up nicely and that there’s potential for it to be even better than the original. And, considering The Meg is based on a popular series of books – there are certainly plenty of interesting sources to pull inspiration from.
Ben Wheatley will direct The Meg 2 with actor Jason Statham returning to star.
The film is expected to be released sometime in the summer of 2023. Nevertheless, stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates on the film as we have them – especially with shooting scheduled to begin in January 2022.
