One of the most appealing aspects about the newly released Godzilla vs Kong, especially since its announcement, was that there would always be a single winner. This kept fans interested and curious as to who, out of Godzilla and Kong, could possibly come out on top. This is a big difference from the original King Kong vs. Godzilla movie, in which it appeared both monsters won to some extent. While the newest Godzilla vs. Kong also saw both monsters alive by the end of the film, Adam Wingard has confirmed that there is indeed a single intended winner in Godzilla vs. Kong.
As revealed in a new Reddit AMA via ComicBook.com, Adam Wingard has claimed that Godzilla is actually the single winner out of Godzilla vs. Kong. Here’s what he had to say:
“Godzilla def won. He killed Kong. Kong was revived. I consider the Mecha battle was outside of that. As they say: Godzilla won the fight, Kong won the movie.”
He definitely took an interesting approach with the climax of this film. While Godzilla did indeed manage to “kill” Kong, he ultimately still needed assistance in destroying Mechagodzilla. Luckily, thanks to Alexander Skarsgård’s character, Kong was revived and he was able to see that Godzilla wasn’t actually the enemy he should’ve been fighting. Instead, Kong chose to help Godzilla and destroy Mechagodzilla once and for all. At least, for now, that is. Nevertheless, the film had one more very interesting and appropriate conclusion after the fact – Godzilla would remain King of the Monsters, while Kong would now be King of Hollow Earth.
It does a great job of paying tribute to everything that’s occurred in the MonsterVerse up to this point, while setting the building blocks for the franchise to move forward. Of course, nothing has been confirmed yet on that front. But we can only assume that with the box office success of Godzilla vs. Kong, there will indeed be more monster action in the future.
