The wait for the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat film is almost over. In celebration of that fact, Warner Bros has now released the opening 7 minutes of Mortal Kombat which you can view down below. But be warned, they are an incredibly R-Rated 7 minutes – and hardly even tease the rest of the violence and bloodshed that’s to come from the rest of the film. In fact, it looks like every fight in the film is intended to have its own unique feel depending on the fighters and the context.
In this particular fight scene that opens the film, we see the rivalry between Bi-Han (Joe Taslim) and Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada). The two characters are ultimately what Mortal Kombat fans will recognize as both Sub-Zero and Scorpion. As a result, the opening minutes of Mortal Kombat does a great job of setting up their characters and the various violent tones that will soon follow. The footage also shows off the beautiful Adelaide forest that the filmmakers shot the scene in. It seems that a majority of the film relies on practical effects and environments, this forest being one such example. With that in mind, it’ll be exciting to see how the other environments in the film turn out.
As for the plot of the new film…
“In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”
Simon McQuoid directed the incredibly violent new movie. Greg Russo and Dave Callaham wrote the script from a story by Oren Uziel and Russo.
The massive cast for the film includes Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion. The film also includes Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young, and Laura Brent as Allison Young.
Fans can expect to finally see the new Mortal Kombat film to hit theaters and HBO Max on April 23, 2021.
