Although a behind the scenes video from the production of The CW’s live-action Powerpuff Girls series was previously released, we now have our first official look at the upcoming show. The CW was able to unveil a new image that shows off the three main cast members, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, Chloe Bennet as Blossom, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup. It’s quite different from the aforementioned behind the scenes footage, which showed the girls in costumes that looked very similar to their outfits from the animated series. This particular Powerpuff Girls image shows off the girls in modern outfits, albeit with the same signature color palettes they’re known for.
The Powerpuff Girls image comes via Variety, and teases how The CW hopes to both adapt and modernize the iconic animated series. While some fans might still have issues getting used to these new interpretations, the series still has a lot further to go in production. So perhaps as we learn more about the show and receive more official glimpses, we can all be satisfied with what they’re doing. In the meantime, it’s definitely been an interesting look at a rather ambitious adaptation.
While an official plot has yet to be revealed, the following brief description was previously released:
“The drama revolves around the Powerpuff Girls, who used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes. Now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?”
The confirmed cast for the series includes Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup. Donald Faison is cast as the girls’ father/creator, Professor Utonium, while Nicholas Podany is playing Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr. Robyn Lively is cast as Sara Bellum. Tom Kenny will narrate the series, reprising his role as the narrator for the original Powerpuff Girls show. The series comes from Juno writer Diablo Cody and The CW producer Greg Berlanti.
A release date for the upcoming live-action Powerpuff Girls series has yet to be announced, but we’ll be sure to share it whenever The CW announces it.
