The Marvel Cinematic Universe shouldn’t have been as successful as it has been thus far. Every expert in the film industry said it would never work. And then, when Marvel announced its first casting choices for iconic superheroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and more, people were even more worried about how all of it would pan out. Now, nearly 13 years after the first MCU film debuted, no one really doubts anything that Marvel Studios does anymore. Their impressive track record speaks for itself, and the casting has been beyond impeccable. And, as we look to the future of the MCU, many fans are wanting to have some of the original heroes back. But, what if these actors took on another role for Marvel? Chris Evans weighs on on who he would have liked to have played had he not taken up the Captain America mantle.
During an interview with Ace Universe, Evans was asked which character besides Steve Rogers he would have liked to take a shot at. Here is what he had to say:
“You know, I’ll say… I mean, I’ll say [Robert] Downey [Jr.], Iron Man … The paychecks would be nice, but just the role is so fun. The role is, you know, he’s the engine, he’s the life. But I suppose that’s kind of signing up for failure. I don’t think there’s anything anyone on this planet could do that would somehow improve upon what Downey’s done, you know what I mean? I don’t consider that a role that’s gonna be like a James Bond or a Superman or Batman, that somehow other people get a bite at the apple. He’s Iron Man, the end.”
So, even Chris Evans, who many believe to be the only person who could play Captain America, feels that Robert Downey Jr. is truly the embodiment of Tony Stark. Speaking of Cap, though, rumors have floundered about the internet that Evans could return to the role for Falcon and The Winter Soldier and beyond. This was compounded a bit by the show’s second episode, where John Walker is shown to take over the mantle, much to the ire of fans everywhere. However, Evans tried to put that rumor to rest on Twitter, and has now given a much more definitive answer in this interview:
“It was a great run and we went out on such a high note that it would be risky to revisit it in my opinion. It was such a good experience and I think it’s better left that way. It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either. I think Cap had such a tricky act to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey. If you’re going to revisit it, it can’t be a cash grab. It can’t be just because the audience wants to be excited. What are we revealing? What are we adding to the story? A lot of things would have to come together.”
So, while people may want Evans to come back, and plenty of clickbait websites still insist he has re-signed with Marvel, it looks like Evans doesn’t want to bastardize the legacy and the ending Captain America was given in Avengers: Endgame. It is time for new heroes to take the forefront and carry on the legend of the Avengers in the MCU.
