There were plenty of new additions to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, including both characters and new footage. One such character was Amber Heard‘s Mera, a character she played in the film Aquaman. However, her appearance in Justice League was rather jarring for some fans – as she appeared with a British accent that didn’t exist in Aquaman. As such, you may be wondering, what’s the deal with Amber Heard’s British accent?
As explained by ScreenRant, there are an interesting couple of reasons given for Amber Heard’s British accent:
“It’s evident that when Whedon was reshaping the film, Heard had to either do ADR in post-production or she had to reshoot her scenes with Momoa. Based on what was seen in Zack Snyder’s Justice League when comparing to the theatrical cut, it seems more likely that Heard did ADR. In Aquaman, the British accent is nowhere to be heard, meaning that perhaps Wan (or even Warner Bros.) didn’t want to go in that direction for Mera in the Aquaman movie, and since Snyder’s version of the character wasn’t going to appear in the theatrical cut, changing the accent was an easy decision to avoid future conflict. The addition of a British dialect doesn’t change the character’s arc, though, but it certainly does affect viewers’ perception especially after having already seen Mera in Aquaman.”
And there you have it. We’ll probably continue to have inconsistencies, as the actress will likely return to her original accent from the first Aquaman film for the sequel. Of course, some fans are desperate for Amber Heard not to return. They were also rather upset to see her in Justice League. After a variety of legal issues associated between her and her ex-husband Johnny Depp, fans have been eager to see Amber Heard removed from the DCEU as a whole. For now, though, she seems to still be involved with the franchise as Mera – especially if Zack Snyder brought her back for Justice League.
Of course, only time will tell the future. As for now, we at least know some of the reasons for why Amber Heard’s British accent exists in Justice League. And at long last, fans can now enjoy Zack Snyder’s highly anticipated cut of the film on HBO Max.
