A new Ace Ventura movie is officially in development from Morgan Creek – after making a deal with Amazon to bring the beloved character back to the big screen and will feature the writers from the 2020 Sonic The Hedgehog movie. It’s not clear yet if Jim Carrey will be returning or not, but one can probably expect that the actor will, as it’s said to be a third installment in the franchise.
The news comes courtesy of a blog post on Park Circus, in which a spokesperson for Morgan Creek says:
We’re pretty excited about our franchise developments with Exorcist and the Ace Ventura franchise – its noticeable from the 3 million fans chatting on the official Facebook page for Ace Ventura that audiences are clamouring for a 3rd instalment… During COVID, audiences have been in love and are thrilled to have beloved characters brought back with new stories. Ace Ventura will see a new day at Amazon as a major motion-picture/theatrical with the Sonic the Hedgehog writers.
As you may remember, Morgan Creek is also currently working on a new The Exorcist film, with Halloween director David Gordon Green.
It’s interesting news, and wouldn’t exactly be a surprise to see Jim Carrey return, as he did Dumb and Dumber To back in 2016 and recently portrayed Doctor Robotnik in 2020’s Sonic The Hedgehog movie – a performance enjoyed by fans and critics alike. The last time we saw Carrey portray the character was in 1995 in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, so it’ll be interesting to see the direction they take with the character.
A new movie has been rumored for a while now. As some of you may remember, we were given an animated series for the character in 1995 and a movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Jr. in 2009 – neither of which featured Jim Carrey’s involvement.
Amazon recently distributed Coming 2 America, so it appears that they could be giving yet another classic film a long-awaited sequel. Here’s hoping it works for Ace Ventura 3.
