With the disastrous year that was 2020 behind us, everyone is looking to the future to bring us back into some semblance of normal. With the pandemic shutting down the entertainment industry to a near halt, 2021 is finally showcasing new shows and movies for our enjoyment. One of the biggest voids has been from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the mega-powerhouse of film. Now, as the MCU’s Phase 4 has finally begun with their amazing Disney Plus series, WandaVision, the studio and fans are looking towards their first feature film of the New Age: Black Widow. But, with the state of theaters reopening still up in the air, will it make its May release date? Disney’s new CEO has answered the question.
In The Walt Disney Company’s 2021 Annual Meeting of Shareholders, new Disney CEO Bob Chapek confirmed that Black Widow is “currently set for release in theaters” on May 7, 2021:
“Next up is Marvel’s highly-anticipated spy thriller, Black Widow, featuring an all-star cast that includes Oscar Nominee Scarlett Johansson currently set for release in theaters on May 7. I know Marvel fans have been looking forward to this film for a long time and I promise you it’s well worth the wait. It’s absolutely fantastic.”
Chapek had confirmed this before recently in an interview with Deadline, but did keep the door open for a possible Disney Plus release. This quote from the shareholders meeting does seemingly confirm that the theatrical release is their end-all-be-all plan for the prequel film. With the movie having been delayed by a year, it’s rather uncertain how well the turnout will be, even with it being a Marvel film. The hype from all of the waiting may be too much for a prequel film, but with Kevin Feige promising that this movie will greatly impact the future of the MCU, fans will surely turn out, if safe, in droves to the theaters.
Whatever happens, be it a theatrical release or a premium Disney Plus move or a combination of both (similar to the move WB is doing this year), fans are beyond ready to see this movie and Natasha Romanoff’s final adventure in the MCU.
