One of Netflix’s biggest hits over the last few years was Bird Box, a post-apocalyptic film where actress Sandra Bullock played a mother trying to protect her children. In the film, surviving humans are being hunted by unknown creatures that force people to commit suicide if they’re seen. It’s an interesting premise, and one with lots of potential. Apparently Netflix has seen that potential. While it was previously reported that a sequel would be going into development, it looks like there are a variety of Bird Box spin-offs also being produced.
According to a new report, revealed via Deadline, a Spanish-language spin-off is going into production. The new film will be shot in Spain, and it’s intended to examine the lore of the first film from an entirely new point of view. As stated:
“The yet to be titled film, which will sit within David Kosse’s local-language slate at the streamer, is due to start production towards the end of this year in Spain. Cast has yet to be set.
We hear this could be the first of multiple local-language Bird Box spinoffs.”
It’s also been announced that original Bird Box producers Dylan Clark and Chris Morgan will be working with Netflix for the new project. What’s more, the project will be written and directed by the Spanish duo Alex and David Pastor. As for the project’s other producers, Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls will be producing via their Spanish outfit Nostromo Pictures. The new spin-off will also have Ainsley Davies of Chris Morgan Productions, Brian Williams of Dylan Clark Productions, and original Bird Box director Susanne Bier as executive producers.
Hopefully we’ll have more details on the project soon, considering it’s intended to shoot towards the end of this year. With that in mind, it also sounds like we’ll be hearing about plenty of other Bird Box spin-offs as well soon.
