It looks like massive streaming platform Netflix is beginning to develop a live-action series based on the popular Assassin’s Creed video game franchise. This is an interesting announcement, one that reveals Netflix is eager to continue adapting video games as television shows for their service. They’ve already released the massively popular shows based on Castlevania and The Witcher, with further plans to adapt Resident Evil and even Cyberpunk 2077 as TV shows. As such, an Assassin’s Creed live-action series should fit in right at home with Netflix.
What’s interesting, however, is that Netflix will actually be developing a variety of different Assassin’s Creed projects. This will include live-action, animated, and anime series based on the video game property. However, it’s their planned first series which will be a “genre-bending live-action adaptation.”
As reported by Deadline:
“We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for,” said Peter Friedlander, VP, Original Series, Netflix. “From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”
Netflix will be teaming up with Ubisoft to produce the different Assassin’s Creed series projects.
“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise,” said Jason Altman, Head of Ubisoft Film & Television – Los Angeles. “We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”
While the previous Assassin’s Creed live-action film didn’t quite hit with fans, Netflix is certainly the perfect contender to give it another shot. After all, with a plethora of different video game adaptations either released or in the works – most of which have been critically acclaimed – then their plans to create new Assassin’s Creed series should work out for fans and newcomers alike.
