One of Kevin Smith’s most anticipated projects is Mallrats 2, a film which has gone through a variety of working titles like Twilight of the Mallrats. And although the film still doesn’t have a final title attached, it looks like the entire original Mallrats cast is. As revealed by Kevin Smith, everyone is coming back for Mallrats 2 – with cast members that include Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Shannen Doherty, and much more.
The news was revealed by Kevin Smith while speaking in an interview with EW. Here’s what he said, revealing that the film will also begin shooting in 2021:
“Looks like we’re heading toward it now in 2021, which is very exciting for us,” said Smith. “It takes place 25 years after the original and features the entire cast, [and] a new cast of characters as well. It’s about Brodie and his daughter and the death of the mall. The Brodie that we met in Mallrats has only been proven right in life. The world came around to his way of thinking. So, based on that, Brodie never really had to grow up and now, at this juncture in time, we face the moment when he might actually have to become an adult.”
With both original cast members returning and new cast members also joining the fray, it sounds like Mallrats 2 is the perfect follow-up for fans of the original 1995 cult classic. In fact, it’s surprising to see this all come together after so many years. Especially when you consider that the original Mallrats was something of a flop, as Kevin Smith himself commented on. But he also mentioned that the movie perhaps works better today than it ever did in 1995.
“It’s a real relic of its era, but at the same time, maybe except for the lack of cell phones and the haute couture, that movie still plays today, probably better than it did in 1995.”
Hopefully production can start as planned in 2021. Aside from the pandemic, we’ve already had a long enough wait for this highly anticipated sequel – let’s hope it finally goes in front of the cameras this time. The other cast members for the original Mallrats also included Jeremy London, Joey Lauren Adams, Claire Forlani, Jason Mewes, Michael Rooker, and Kevin Smith.
