Its not often that a film’s twist can really catch an entire audience off guard. Ever since Alfred Hitchcock introduced the plot twist to cinema, people have been surprised and in awe when a movie’s plot suddenly take an unexpected left. However, as cinema became a part of the global lexicon, audiences wised up to a screenwriter’s tricks, and started catching the twist long before its actual reveal. In the last 30 years or so, there really have only been a handful of films that truly surprises the entire audience with it’s twist. One such film was M. Night Shyamalan’s directorial debut, The Sixth Sense. Having arguably one of Hollywood’s greatest and unforeseen twists ever, The Sixth Sense threw us all for a loop and also gave us the amazing performance of the young Haley Joel Osment.
Now, Osment looks back on this career launching role, and is ready to return to that world.
While speaking with ComicBook, Osment discussed his love of the role and a willingness to return to the character, two decades later. That is, if Shyamalan wants to explore it any further.
“I doubt that he would do a third crossover, but anytime Night calls, that’s his universe, so I’d definitely be up to dive in there with him again. It’s crazy, we had the 20th anniversary of the film last fall and we did a screening at Hollywood Forever and all that stuff and it’s wild that it’s been that many years.”
Shyamalan had his career explode and was shot out of a rocket after this film changed the landscape of cinema. While he hasn’t been able to truly recreate the same level of success since, he has done some unexpected things in film. Like, as Osment related to, having a film crossover between Unbreakable and Split, 16 years apart. It would be interesting to see how Osment’s character grew up with such an incredible and terrifying skill of ‘seeing dead people’. What kind of adult would he be? How did he handle this ability through puberty?
Maybe, with Haley Joel Osment on board, Shyamalan might want to go back to that universe and see just how much his world has changed.
