In 2020, a study conducted sought to answer a question that has intrigued horror enthusiasts for decades: What is the scariest movie of all time? After analyzing dozens of films and closely monitoring viewers’ physical responses, the results were clear – with one 2012 horror movie emerging as the most terrifying movie ever made.
The study, dubbed the “Science of Scare Project,” provided fascinating insights into why this film, directed by Scott Derrickson, has such a profound impact on audiences.
The study used a scientific approach to measure fear responses, selecting 50 of the most critically acclaimed and beloved horror movies from the past 40 years. Participants were fitted with heart rate monitors and subjected to marathon sessions of these films. The monitors tracked the average heart rate of each participant as well as the spikes that occurred during particularly frightening scenes. This data-driven method allowed researchers to quantify fear in a way that transcends subjective opinion.
The study revealed that Sinister maintained an average heart rate of 86 beats per minute (BPM) among participants—32% higher than the resting heart rate of 65 BPM. However, what truly set Sinister apart was its ability to elicit the highest spike in heart rate, with one scene pushing participants’ heart rates to a terrifying 131 BPM. This scene, which involves a lawnmower, has since become infamous for its shock value and nightmarish execution.
While Sinister took the top spot, the study also highlighted other films that ranked high on the scare scale. James Wan’s Insidious (2010) and The Conjuring (2013) also proved to be formidable contenders, with average heart rates of 85 BPM and 84 BPM, respectively. However, Sinister‘s unique combination of suspense, disturbing imagery, and psychological horror allowed it to edge out the competition.
In a genre where fear is the ultimate currency, Sinister has set a new benchmark. Whether you’re a seasoned horror aficionado or a casual viewer looking for a good scare, this film delivers on every front, making it a must-watch for anyone seeking to test their nerves.
