It is really hard to miss this obvious and blatant pun here, so I’m just going to lean right into it: The latest casting news for Spider-Man 3 is…shocking! Now, with all that is going on in the world today and the craziness that is an entertainment industry trying to get back to some semblance of normal, news has been few and far between – as much of it is just speculation at best. Even when the story comes from a very reputable source, you have to take it with a grain of salt until otherwise confirmed by the studio. Case in point, the latest story on a returning actor to the Spider-Verse!
The Hollywood Reporter is running an exclusive that Jamie Foxx is in final talks to return to the role of Electro for the allegedly titled Spider-Man: Homesick. This would be the second melding of previous Spider-Man universes into this Marvel Cinematic Universe partnership for Sony. First, J.K. Simmons returned as iconic news man/ Spidey hater, J. Jonah Jameson, from the Raimi/Maguire Spidey movies. Now, Foxx coming back as the much maligned villain from the absolutely hated The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie with Andrew Garfield. There are no other details given as to how the character will be used or if it will be a straight copy from that movie or a brand new version, but this does see the ‘multiverse’ aspect of the Spider-Man franchises blending even more into one cinematic universe.
If this is true, this would be very interesting to see. Hopefully, they go a completely different route than the terrible origin and design given to the character in his last appearance. Jamie Foxx’s immense talent was wasted there, so fingers crossed that Sony learned their lesson and ease up on the reigns a bit, letting Marvel really get to work with an iconic Spidey villain. Again, take this with a grain of salt for now until something official gets announced, but this will make for a very interesting film if true.
Another thing to consider, though, is that THR got their info slightly wrong, and Foxx is actually returning to voice Electro in the animated sequel, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. Just food for thought.
