One of the most saddening announcements this year is that actor Chadwick Boseman, known for having played Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, died recently following a four year long battle with colon cancer. Now many of his fans have been starting and signing petitions to see a Confederate monument in his hometown of Anderson, South Carolina replaced with a statue of Chadwick Boseman himself.
As of this writing, the biggest petition to see a statue of Chadwick Boseman places in Anderson, South Carolina has already gathered around 40,000 signatures. It’s an impressive number and will likely only continue to grow as Chadwick Boseman fans share and sign the petition over time.
According to the petition, which you can find over at Change.org:
“Mr. Boseman is without question an American treasure and his accolades go on and on. It is only fitting that his work is honored in the same place that birthed him. Earlier this year efforts were made by local residents to remove a Confederate monument located in the town square of downtown Anderson. Unfortunately, this effort gained no traction due to current South Carolina law. It is currently illegal to remove or alter monuments dedicated to confederate war efforts in the state of South Carolina,(SECTION 10-1-165). This has made any effort to remove the statue impossible.”
The petition continues to emphasize that a statue of Chadwick Boseman would be a much better fit for the spot where the Confederate monument is located.
“Many will agree that Mr.Boseman is without question worthy of such a monument in his home town, but I would like to go a step further. I believe that Mr.Boseman is worthy of the spot that is currently occupied in the town square. For those unfamiliar with Anderson, where the confederate monument is currently located is in the center of the town.”
The petition continues to explain that Section 10-1-165 needs to be “repealed” in their effort to see the Confederate monument replaced with a Chadwick Boseman statue.
