It seems to be a good time for reboots, and the 1990’s slasher flick Urban Legend has been picked for the treatment. The movie has seen varying attempts at sequels in the past, but this will be the first outright reboot under the Urban Legend franchise name.
Now, according to Collider, casting is apparently already underway for the new slasher movie. It seems like actress Sydney Chandler is being eyed for the film’s lead, with fellow actress Katherine McNamara also attached. There’s also a chance that Keith Powers will be included in the cast, which is being described as an “ensemble” which “will include a handful of well-known, diverse young actors.”
As for the plot of the new film, it’s definitely seems to be a little more relevant for modern day than the original Urban Legend movie. Here’s what the plot details reveal so far about the upcoming Urban Legend reboot from Screen Gems:
“The Urban Legend reboot will move to the franchise into the digital age, where urban legends are often born on the internet, where they spread like wildfire. The movie will center on a diverse cast of college students as they navigate a series of bizarre deaths that resemble urban legends linked to the darkest corners of social media.”
Apparently the plot will also explore concepts involving deepfake technology, which is a rather interesting element to consider for a film like this. Hopefully we get to hear more about this unique take on the franchise’s familiar tropes and how it will reshape the basic concept for today’s audiences with such modern elements.
Colin Minihan will be writing and directing the Urban Legend reboot.
Mike Medavoy and Benjamin Anderson are producing the film for Phoenix Pictures. Meanwhile Screen Gems executives Eric Paquette and Michael Bitar will also be involved.
