Matt Reeves’ The Batman rightfully closed out the DC Fandome event this weekend. As the whole day was jammed pack full of awesome and exciting news, like the final trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, our first look at Black Adam, a BTS video from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Reeves arguably trumped them all when he showcased the first teaser trailer for his take on The World’s Greatest Detective. And, as his film will cover Year 2 of the Caped Crusader, he also let a nice little tidbit out that this stand alone project won’t exactly stand alone. It looks like it will tie in to a Gotham PD – a new television series specifically for the streaming service, HBO Max.
Matt Reeves is not only working on The Batman film, but is also a part of the team behind the Gotham PD series set for HBO Max. And, the director revealed that the series will deal with the shady and corrupt police force as The Batman starts out as a brand new vigilante. This means the series will act as a prequel of sorts to the film. Reeves stated that the show will focus on the dark side of the Gotham police force, who have fallen into the villainy of the city. And, the main character will be a member of said squad, in search of their soul as they do some unthinkable things from those who are meant to protect and serve.
While the corruption in the GCPD has well been documented throughout the history of the comics, as well as the movies and shows, you can’t help but notice a correlation to current events going on in the world today. What this show will also do is serve as the backdrop for a city that is in and of itself a whole character in the Batman lore.
