The next generation of gaming consoles is upon us, and as such we can expect to see all kinds of changes to the industry. And according to a new rumor, these changes might also include Xbox Live Gold. It seems that Microsoft recently ended their Xbox Live Gold yearly subscription option, which might imply that there’s a massive change coming to their subscription service. And according to some – that change might just be Xbox Live Gold becoming free for all.
Xbox insider Klobrille emphasized the likelihood that Microsoft will make Xbox Live Gold free for all of its users. This makes even more sense when you consider Microsoft actually has an event for Xbox scheduled for this Thursday. Although there’s a possibility there still won’t be an announcement on the subject, given that the event is intended to only focus on the upcoming Xbox Series X and Xbox One games.
But that doesn’t mean there couldn’t be some kind of announcement regarding a change to Xbox Live Gold. Of course, that also leads into the question regarding how Microsoft intends to make up for this loss of revenue. It would also interfere with their Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which uses Xbox Live Gold as an additional feature compared to the normal Xbox Game Pass.
There are a lot of different ways this could go, and as such there might not be free Xbox Live Gold coming either way. But until Microsoft gives an official statement on the matter, or happens to announce free Xbox Live Gold, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Hopefully we’ll get some additional clarification at the upcoming Xbox event this Thursday. In any case, it would certainly be an interesting move on Microsoft’s part – one that could give Xbox a new edge going into the future.
