Late last week it was revealed that Sony were working on a secret movie for the SPUMC (that’s Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters if you were wondering) from director S.J. Clarkson of Banshee and Succession fame. The film itself was rumored to be a potential Madame Web film, something that has been discussed as an option since last September. In Variety’s exclusive report, it was revealed that while Clarkson had signed on to helm the film, the studio was looking to cast the role with a big name actress before hiring a writer. Two of the names mentioned in the article were Charlize Theron and Amy Adams.
Adams is no stranger to the world of comic book adaptions – having previously started in three DCEU films as Lois Lane, but with recent reports that Henry Cavill is set to sign a new deal as the Man of Steel, she may have prior commitments.
Whilst Theron hasn’t appeared in a DC or Marvel film as of yet, she is set to star in Netflix Superhero movie, The Old Guard based on the Greg Rucka comic of the same name. Theron has already made a name for herself in the world of Sci-Fi, having previously starred in Prometheus and Mad Max: Fury Road. Although the actress was recently confirmed to not be returning for the Mad Max role, she may be in need of a new franchise.
For those unaware – Madame Web is a clairvoyant and precognitive mutant who was first introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 in 1980. The character was often seen as more of a supporting character to the the titular hero – given that she is often found confined to a life support machine due to her suffering from Myasthenia gravis. With this is mind, Variety does go on to state that it is likely that the project may differ from what we would expect since – that would be hard sell to the general comic book audience.
If they were to go the original route, you can’t help but feel that either one of these actresses would be better suited for other roles. It could even be that Madame Web will be seen as more of a mentor role to another younger superhero who could handle all of the action scenes. Personally, I still say Helen Mirren is the best person for the job!
This project would join the recently announced Jackpot film that was revealed by Deadline, coming from Arrow writer Marc Guggenheim and the upcoming Morbius and Venom: Let There Be Carnage – that were recently pushed back to 2021.
