In the tradition of the original The Twilight Zone and television shows of that caliber, Black Mirror has remained an incredibly popular sci-fi anthology series with plenty of creepy horror elements to appeal to genre fans. Its reputation has caught on immensely over the years for being a cutting-edge example of satire, and for those reasons it seems that Black Mirror Season 6 might not actually be getting released as soon as some fans might have hoped for. In fact, it seems that Black Mirror Season 6 is being delayed indefinitely.
According to the show’s creator, Charlie Brooker, he feels that another season of Black Mirror might not exactly be what the world needs right now. It’s a series that has a fairly mean-spirited view of the world, given its emphasis on incredibly dark political and science-fiction satire, so Brooker has stated that the current state of the world just might not be the right time for such a show.
Here’s what Charles Brooker said in his own words after having appeared on the UK’s Radio Times:
“At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on any [Black Mirror episodes],” Brooker said. “I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”
It certainly makes sense that Brooker wouldn’t be so eager to revisit Black Mirror for another season with the way the world has been going amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.
But the show does have its fans, so hopefully we can expect a return someday when things line up a bit better for the show. Or at least when the world clears up again. Until then, it looks like we can look forward to seeing Charles Brooker approach some new types of material.
