It shouldn’t be of any surprise that Disney is yet again aiming to adapt one of their classic animated films for live-action. After all, they’ve had plenty of success in recent years with such projects. For example, films like The Lion King and The Jungle Book have been incredibly successful for the company. This time it looks like Disney will be tackling their 1997 animated film Hercules as a live-action film.
The new live-action adaptation of Hercules that’s apparently being developed by Disney has quite a few interesting names attached. Those surrounding the project include the following, as explained by THR:
“The studio has hired Dave Callaham, the action scribe who launched the Expendables franchise and wrote Marvel’s upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, to pen the script.
Joe and Anthony Russo, the filmmakers behind the Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War, are set to produce via their AGBO banner.”
Of course, the movie is still in the incredibly early stages of development so it’s yet to be seen how exactly the property will be revisited. It’s possible that the film might remain close to its animated source material, and even carry over some of its popular musical numbers. Although it’s also possible they might take cues from Mulan and make the movie even more distant from its source material. Either way, it should be fascinating to see how Disney intends on bringing a film like Hercules and its rich lore to life on the big screen in live-action where a mythological story like that could really flourish.
There also hasn’t been any word on who might direct the film, especially since Joe and Anthony Russo are merely attached as producers via AGBO, but as development continues we should hopefully hear more soon. It does seem to be though that the film will be developed for a theatrical release rather than being distributed through Disney Plus.
