The Coronavirus continues to have a negative impact on everyone in the country, as even giant corporations like Disney continue to take losses. Along with their parks closing and stock continuing to plummet (which leaves the door open for Apple to make a game-changing move), Disney has had to push back several other high profile films. Mulan, New Mutants, and Antlers all had to be delayed from their March/April release dates. Now, it appears their biggest tentpole of the year Black Widow will also be delayed.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Widow has been delayed indefinitely due to growing concerns about the Coronavirus, with most theater chains shutting down for a minimum of six weeks. Disney has also delayed the release of Personal History of David Copperfield and The Woman in the Window, as both were also scheduled for a May release. It is unknown at this time whether fellow Disney projects Artemis Foul or Soul will move from their early summer release dates.
This news was bound to hit given the circumstances, but I am sure Marvel fans are still sad to see it. Marvel has been synonymous with opening the summer movie season, but given the current spread of the Coronavirus, it’s likely that the summer movie season will be put on hold. I am intrigued to see how this impacts Phase Four of the MCU, as Marvel is likely to delay all of their releases due to the production of projects being put on hold.
It will also be interesting to see how Disney utilizes Disney+ during the outbreak. A film like Armetis Foul that has been delayed several times would be a great fit for the platform, as audiences are currently craving any new product to watch during this period of isolation.
