Sony has made it no secret their plans to develop their own cinematic universe. The studio set a solid foundation with Spider-Man Homecoming and Far From Home, while Venom was a sizable box office hit despite earning poor reviews. This year will be a major one for the developing brand, as Morbius and Venom 2′s performance will likely decide whether rumored projects will come to fruition, including a new untitled spin-off that’s set to be written by Roberto Orci.
In an exclusive report by The Wrap, Sony has tapped Roberto Orci (who has worked with Sony in the past on The Amazing Spider-Man 2) to craft an untitled Spider-Man spin-off project. This could be for various different Spider-Man foes, most likely a character that would fit in a potential Sinister Six film. Based on what’s already been made/announced (Kraven the Hunter is in development stages), my guess would be a Doctor Octopuss or Sandman solo film.
It’s fascinating how Sony has taken a page out of Marvel’s big-screen playbook in creating their own cinematic universe, knowing they will need their own ecosystem once Spider-Man leaves the MCU. Marvel’s success has shown the financial prosperity and significant growth a brand can receive if this gamble works, but DC is living proof that it’s easier said than done to accomplish.
As far as what Sony character is getting the spin-off treatment, my hope is Doctor Octopuss gets a solo project. Serving as one of Spider-Man’s most noteworthy villains due to his unique powers and tragic backstory, I think the character could benefit greatly from having a larger opportunity to develop. It will be interesting who Orci’s script ultimately focuses on, as Sony could very easily go off the beaten path and surprise audiences.
