It appears things are positively moving forward for Disney’s upcoming Hocus Pocus sequel. In fact, a director is already attached for the project – Hairspray director Adam Shankman will be directing Hocus Pocus 2 as an original project for Disney’s popular streaming service Disney Plus.
Many fans have been desperate for a Hocus Pocus continuation, especially as the cult classic status of the original movie has grown over the years. Of course, one of the main reasons for justifying such a sequel would be to have the original cast back – and, although they aren’t confirmed, it does appear that Disney is hopeful for the original trio of actresses to reprise their roles as the Sanderson Sisters.
As reported by Variety:
“The original Hocus Pocus cast members are not attached to the sequel, but Disney is hopeful that they will become involved in some capacity. Sources say that ideally the trio of actresses will reprise their roles, rather than having to completely reboot the first film.”
It’s interesting to see that progress is finally happening on the film, and that they want to make a sequel instead of a straightforward remake. Let’s just hope things continue working out and they can get the original cast back. After all, what would be the point of producing a sequel after so many years if they’re not going to get Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy back to reprise their roles? We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
The script for the Disney Plus film Hocus Pocus 2 was written by writer and co-producer Jen D’Angelo. The movie will be produced by Lynn Harris. Adam Shankman will be directing as stated above. However, it is still unclear when exactly Shankman could be directing this film – especially because he’s still attached to direct an Enchanted sequel for Disney titled Disenchanted.
