One of 2020’s most intriguing projects is Spiral: From The Book Of Saw, a reinvention of the Saw brand by talented stand-up comedian Chris Rock. The Saw franchise in its heyday was wonderfully sadistic in its pursuit of shocking kills and gory traps, but the series only saw two entries in the 2010’s, with 2017’s Jigsaw dividing fans and critics with its attempt to revive the franchise.
Set for a May 15, 2020 release, distributor Lionsgate has finally released the first teaser for the film after a cut leaked via Reddit yesterday. Take a look at the trailer along with the official synopsis and new poster:
A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game

I am a die-hard Saw fan, as the genre has a shameless genre horror movie appeal with its nonsensical plotlines and over the top violence. Spiral’s first teaser shows some promise, especially with stars Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson getting to interact in this twisted world. The visual look of this film is a lot more refined than previous entries, with series regular Darren Lynn Bousman doing a good job of modernizing this project.
My main hope for Spiral is that this reboot does keep in line with the series’ consistent tone of over the top mayhem. Some reboots can withhold on the bloodshed in order to appease new audiences, but I have faith Chris Rock can do justice to the series’ roots.
