The Marvel Cinematic Universe saw one of its biggest hits with the release of Avengers: Endgame, a movie which acts as the conclusion to Marvel’s very own Infinity Saga – which encompasses every movie up to that point since the release of Iron Man. As such, there was a lot hanging on the shoulders of Avengers: Endgame – and with so many movies and storylines thrown into the mix, the film was built with several massive layers of Easter eggs and obscure references. It appears there was one recently spotted Endgame Easter egg that will only be recognizable to those who happen to live in one of the movie’s filming locations.
As pointed out by Express, one of the scenes in the movie shows Thor dealing with his own depression when he failed to stop Thanos in the previous film. As Bruce Banner and Rocket locate Thor in his cottage taking time to wallow and grieve, there are quite a few shots of his cottage where you can clearly see items in the background.
If you look closely, one such item is a bottle of Irn-Bru, a popular Scottish soda which comes with a distinctive blue and orange label. It was actually included in the shot as a reference to St. Abbs, the aforementioned filming location. In fact, the location happens to be a small fishing village on the southeastern coast of Scotland which now hosts a sign that reads “twinned with New Asgard.”
The drink, which happens to be pronounced “Iron Brew”, is an incredibly popular soft drink in Scotland. In fact, it appears to outsell Coca-Cola in Scotland and has even been known as ‘Scotland’s other national drink.’ What’s more, the drink might even be slightly more than an Easter egg but a legitimate jab at Thor’s own alcoholism. It appears some Scots consider the drink a hangover cure, so it might make sense in that context as to why Thor would own some Irn-Bru.
It goes to show how much of a layered movie Avengers: Endgame was, and that even underneath the massive connections to other films or comic book storylines, that the filmmakers were still able to implement the subtlest of Easter eggs into the background of any given scene. Hopefully those who live in the filming location of St. Abbs enjoyed picking up on the obscure Endgame Easter egg.
