After all the drama that went underway between Sony and Marvel over the rights of Spider-Man, there hasn’t been much in terms of speculation about the latest Spider-Man entry. As the last entry in the partnership between the two sides, Spider-Man 3 presents some interesting opportunities in closing out the character’s MCU ties while continuing Tom Holland’s run in Sony’s new superhero universe.
According to ComicBook, it appears that Spider-Man 3 will begin production this summer, set to shoot in Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Iceland. The latter location is perhaps the most intriguing, with some believing that Kraven the Hunter could be the villain due to Iceland’s unique setting. It’s also been confirmed that Homecoming and Far From Home director Jon Watts will return for this third entry.
The idea of Kraven the Hunter being Spider-Man’s primary foes is an intriguing one, as the character has yet to have the chance to shine on the big screen. Considering this third film will likely deal with the ramifications of Far From Home’s shocking after-credits scene, I am guessing the villain will have a smaller role as part of a more character-driven approach to Spider-Man. It’s also important to note that Kraven is a member of the Sinister Six, which Sony is trying to jumpstart as part of its developing cinematic universe.
Trying to take a page out of the MCU playbook, it will be interesting to see how Sony prospers with their ambitious plan. While Venom was a big success for them, its still unknown whether the upcoming Morbius or a Sinister Six film will connect with audiences. If Morbius underperforms this summer, it could have a drastic impact on what Sony will do with their future films.
