Avengers: Endgame saw two of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes give their all in a heartbreaking sacrifice to save the universe. While there seems no hope for Iron Man to have survived the snap that killed him – the funeral seems pretty definitive, anyway – there could still be a chance for Black Widow.
In Endgame, the heroes had to collect all six Infinity Stones to reverse the Decimation and bring back the half of the universe that vanished when Thanos infamously snapped his fingers in 2017’s Avengers: Infinity War. The stone that proved hardest to get hold of was the Soul Stone. Just like when Thanos grabbed it in Infinity War, the Avengers had to sacrifice a soul for a soul.
This time round, Hawkeye and Black Widow were the two who had to decide who would live to retrieve the Stone and who would make the all important sacrifice. After they fought it out, Black Widow ended up being the one to make the jump over that cliff – and her death gave Hawkeye the Soul Stone.
Then, after the Hulk uses the Infinity Stones to reverse the original snap, he explains he tried to bring Black Widow back from the dead but couldn’t.
But a new theory from Screen Rant argues Natasha Romanoff may in fact be alive and well – just stuck on Vormir, where she died. This makes sense – if the Hulk’s snap did in fact resurrect Natasha, there’s no reason she’d be back with them on Earth. Everyone restored by the second snap came back exactly where they’d been when they vanished.
With Natasha getting her own solo film next year, it would seem the perfect time to bring her back. Screen Rant speculate the film could even show her trying to escape Vormir. Although Scarlett Johansson herself has confirmed that Black Widow is really dead, it definitely seems that if there was a time to bring her back, it would be now.
