Because the latest Marvel crossover event, Avengers: Endgame, was the conclusive finale to all the films before it – officially considered the Infinity Saga – the movie is full of potentially endless easter eggs and references to past Marvel projects. In fact, it appears that on top of Thor already being able to go back in time and reunite with several characters from his past – his original enemies the Frost Giants were also nearly included in the film.
The film’s concept artist, Jerad S. Marantz, has recently been sharing an enormous amount of concept art from Avengers: Endgame on his Instagram account. The artwork has been incredibly enlightening when it comes to understanding the different phases in which Avengers: Endgame was developed. And now that we know the Frost Giants were at one point going to be involved, Marantz’ concept art also proves an exciting new redesign that would’ve been a welcomed addition to the film franchise.
Of course, although Marantz helped redesign the Frost Giants for the film, even he doesn’t know much about how they would’ve been used in the movie. As fans of the film already know, the third act of the film is packed with an insanely incredible amount of characters from across the film franchise – and so it’s difficult to pack in another group of characters like the Frost Giants to an already massive battle. And because the filmmakers decided not to use them, it was never confirmed whether or not they would’ve been fighting with or against Thanos.
Of course, that doesn’t mean the Frost Giants couldn’t make a comeback later on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Especially when you consider the extensive fourth phase that Marvel is planning, there could be plenty of different opportunities we don’t yet know about for the Frost Giants to make a return.
Until then, we can assume Avengers: Endgame had plenty of other scrapped ideas that we will likely see used in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, regardless of whether or not the Frost Giants return.
