It’s hard to believe the drama surrounding Spider-man between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures was just over 4 months ago. But with at least 2 more films left under Marvel Studios, the future of Spidey is looking bright – and speaking of the future, it looks like we could see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appear with Venom – in Venom 2.
The rumor comes from Geeks Worldwide, and Daniel Richtman also reported on it. Richtman first discussed the scoop on a backers-only page of his Patreon. Because Richtman did not enjoy the first Venom film, he classified the report as bad news. If true, this would only further add to a pinnacle of rumors swirling around since Venom was in development. Ever since the film had been announced, fans were hoping to see Spidey appear alongside the popular antihero.
The upcoming film, being directed by Andy Serkis, will see Tom Hardy returning in the title role as he faces off against Woody Harrelson as Carnage. Adding Spider-Man to the film could potentially give Venom the upper hand against Cletus Kasady. It would also allow Tom Holland to appear in future Sony Spiderverse films.
The characters from Sony’s films are unlikely to appear in the MCU, but with Sony and Marvel expected to part ways after two more MCU films, the door is open for Holland to make the jump to Sony.
Spider-Man’s role in the Venom sequel would unlikely be any more than a cameo. The film is less than a year away, and any large scene with Spidey would require substantial amounts of VFX. I, however, am going to remain optimistic.
Spider-Man’s film rights remain with Sony after Marvel Comics was dealing with financial issues. They had no choice but to license their properties away to movie studios which included Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Almost all of the properties are back with Marvel by now, but Spidey remains detached (for now).
Venom 2 is set to hit theaters on October 2nd, 2020.
