Avengers: Endgame, the highest grossing movie of all time, was nothing short of an emotional roller coaster. We saw reunions and resurrections, lost love, sacrifice, and heart break. The most emotionally taxing moment came after Tony Stark had saved the universe with the Infinity Stones, and killing himself in the process. It was gut-wrenching losing Stark, as we had followed Iron Man since day one, and since Robert Downey Jr. played the foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a tee. We all cried our eyes out as Pepper Potts tells Tony he can rest now, and he fades into oblivion. Now, thanks to the script being published on line, we know that Tony had a final thought, and it’s available to you know.
If you look at the released script, before Pepper can tell Tony that he can now rest, Stark does his best to convey to her and the MCU, ‘I’m sorry’. Two small words, and an infinite amount of tears from audiences distraught over losing the foundation of everything. These two words carried with them a massive load of acknowledgement and emotion. Check out how the script read below:
Tony Stark will always be the godfather of the MCU. He is the one that brought it all to life with his declaration, ‘I am Iron Man’. So, It’s so very fitting that his last words be the same. While the ‘I’m sorry’ line carries a lot of weight, the bookend approach of that iconic line is so much more poignant for the send off. Ultimately, it is hard to fault the final cut of Endgame that we received, even after seeing deleted scenes and reading the full script. The film is a masterpiece for geeks worldwide to enjoy. And it is all thanks to Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Iron Man that started it all. So, there’s nothing to be sorry about, Mr. Stark.
