The Marvel Cinematic Universe has spent over a decade bringing tons of your favorite comic book characters to life throughout two dozen films. Heroes and villains alike have been brought off the page and onto the screen with (mostly) fantastic results. Even some more obscure characters, like the Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Strange, and Ant-Man made their way into cinemas and into our hearts. But, there is one character who has been teased in an Easter Egg, is a fan favorite with a cult following, and who is quite powerful. And, as it turns out, there is another Easter Egg that was meant for Avengers: Endgame (the highest grossing movie of all time) that just didn’t quite make the cut.
Beta Ray Bill, a staple of Thor’s comic book pantheon, and the original wielder of StormBreaker, is a beloved character that fans are dying to see get the silver screen treatment by Marvel. He was teased a bit in Thor: Ragnarok as one of the former Champions of Sakar, forever immortalized by the gigantic bust effigy on the Grandmaster’s Gladiator Tower. Well, it turns out that he was also meant to be an Easter Egg in Endgame, but was cut. Well, more specifically, his home world of Korbin was to make an appearance. During the scene where we first meet up with 2014 Gamora and Nebula (i.e. ‘Bad’ Nebula), it was on Korbin and had Nebula killing a Korbinite. This was all in the script for the film, which has been released online, and the Easter Egg was pointed out on Reddit.
I guess the planet Nebula& Gamora are shown on in 2014 in Endgame is the “korbinite home world.” Really cool. from r/marvelstudios
Many, many fans wanted to see Beta Ray make an appearance in the MCU, but director Joe Russo puts it all in perceptive with simple logistics.
“So many characters. Beta Ray Bill has been discussed many times. He was one of my favorite characters as a kid, but it’s just, really, functionally, where does he fit? We’ve got a lot of characters that you care about that we’re trying to tell the stories about, a long arcing narrative about, and when new characters come into the world they have to have an effect on the story otherwise there’s no value in introducing them and we just didn’t have the space in a film like this to do that.”
So, there you have it, folks. He simply didn’t quite fit into the already jam packed story. That’s not to say that he might appear at a later time, but we’ll just have to wait and see if that happens.
