Hela destroyed Mjolnir in Thor: Ragnarok. Therefore, the Thunder God (not the God of Hammers) needed a weapon to kill Thanos. In Avengers: Infinity War, he traveled to Nivadellir with Rocket and Groot. The giant dwarves crafted his hammer. So they should be able to craft a new weapon. Though, most of them were killed after Thanos had them make the Gauntlet. Peter Dinklage’s Eitri was the only one left. Therefore, with Groot’s help, he made Stormbreaker. The ax may not have achieved its purpose in Infinity War. But at the very beginning of Avengers: Endgame, Thor sliced the villain’s head clean off. In the comics, Stormbreaker belonged to another character. And if the MCU has introduced Stormbreaker, you know that Beta Ray Bill can’t be too far behind – possibly in Thor: Love and Thunder.
ScreenRant believed the same thing as I did when watching Thor wield Stormbreaker in two films thus far. They recently discussed the fact that anyone can wield the ax. Thus, while only a select few are worthy enough for Mjolnir. “Mjolnir requires worthiness, not Stormbreaker,” said The Russo Brothers. This may lead to a horse-faced Korbinite to acquire Stormbreaker. Sure, this may be the case in the MCU. But when Beta Ray Bill appeared in the comics, the ax was made specifically for him.
Bill bested Thor in battle. Therefore, the winner left with his prize hammer. Thor was pit into a horrible depression, knowing he was no longer worthy. To make things right, Odin went to Eitri to craft Bill his own weapon. Enter: Stormbreaker.
Star-Lord and his gang paid The Collector a visit in Guardians of the Galaxy. Benecio Del Toro’s character is known for doing exactly what his name suggests. And in the background, you could see his souvenirs from all sorts of races. Amongst his collection was Howard the Duck and Cosmo the Spacedog. There was also a creature that looked oddly like a Korbinite. Fans were quick to believe this was Beta Ray Bill. But director, James Gunn, denied this case.
Then in Thor: Ragnarok, there was a totem pole in Sakaar. It contained the faces of Bill, Ares, Bi-Beast, and Man-Thing. Assumptions were that these were past champions of The Grandmaster’s arena. Bill was in a rough draft for Ragnarok. But Kevin Feige said they couldn’t do him justice by the story. Therefore, he should be saved for a story that could.
Rumors now point to Bill in either Thor: Love and Thunder or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the current Guardians comics, Bill is a member alongside Silver Surfer. If he appears in Thor 4, our hero could lose both weapons. Bill may get the ax. But Jane Foster is slated to get the hammer. Or, Eitri could return to build yet another weapon.
Thor: Love and Thunder will swing into theaters on November 5th, 2021. GOTG3 hasn’t been given an official release date yet. Screen Geek will let you know if we hear anything else about Beta Ray Bill and/or a release date for the latter movie.
