We live in a time when many classic horror icons are being reintroduced with new reboots all of the time. While we haven’t heard much about the Pumpkinhead remake since it was first announced, it was only a matter of time before producer Peter Block decided to give an update on the project. Although he doesn’t reveal much, the Saw producer did reveal that there is in fact “exciting news” on the way. Perhaps this wait will be worth it for Pumpkinhead fans after all.
Peter Block hinted at the exciting future Pumpkinhead movie announcement while speaking with Rue Morgue. Here’s what he specifically had to say:
“We have some exciting news that I’m not allowed to share yet, but that should be making its way out soon,” Block explained while speaking with Rue Morgue’s Michael Gingold last week.
He continued, “Pumpkinhead is a movie I just love… and while the original Pumpkinhead is a great movie, I think that there is more that can be done with that idea. Sometimes I loathe remakes and reboots because I don’t see the reason for them, but Pumpkinhead is one of those where I believe that the story and the themes of it are so good, but there’s also a way of updating it where less focus on the creature in the beginning will add to a lot of the suspense.”
Hopefully the news turns out to be as exciting as it’s promised to be. The Pumpkinhead franchise has never quite met its full potential, and it’s nice to see that Peter Block sees it that way too. Let’s just hope that he doesn’t end up taking the franchise in a direction that should be left alone – not unlike Syfy’s attempt at reviving the Pumpkinhead brand in the early 2000’s.
But after several interesting uses of Pumpkinhead in some of the more recent comics inspired by the films, maybe people are finally starting to understand how and why the character works the way it does. Perhaps we’re ready to get a true Pumpkinhead reboot that does justice to the original.
