It hasn’t been too long since director Neill Blomkamp left the RoboCop Returns project that was being produced by MGM and Orion, and now it looks like another director has taken his place. Abe Forsythe, the man who directed Little Monsters which became a hit over on Hulu, is now bringing RoboCop back to theaters with RoboCop Returns.
While we still don’t know much about how RoboCop Returns will turn out, the movie is based on an original script from writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner that ended up being canceled in 1988. It was rewritten by Justin Rhodes and now Abe Forsythe is doing another rewrite. Hopefully things balance out in the end and we get a proper RoboCop sequel for modern audiences.
Although Blomkamp is no longer attached to the project, here’s what he had to say about it when he was still onboard:
“The original definitely had a massive effect on me as a kid. I loved it then and it remains a classic in the end of 20th Century sci-fi catalog, with real meaning under the surface. Hopefully that is something we can get closer to in making of a sequel. That is my goal here. As I’ve gotten older, the part that really resonated with me is identity, and the search for identity. As long as the human component is there, a good story can work in any time period, it’s not locked into a specific place in history.”
He went in to add:
“What’s so cool about RoboCop is that like good Westerns, sci-fi films and dramas, the human connection is really important to a story well told. What draws me now is someone searching for their lost identity, taken away at the hands of people who are benefiting from it, and seeing his memory jogged by events. That is most captivating.”
Hopefully some of these ideas make their way into the final project, as they seem to follow a lot of what made the original RoboCop special.
