It was funny how Tony Stark spent the first half of Avengers: Endgame mourning Peter Parker. And then in Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter spent the movie mourning Tony. The MCU story of Spider-Man is obviously different than what we saw in the movies before. Since he lives in a world with the Avengers, Spidey looks up to Iron Man instead of Uncle Ben. Fans have different opinions when it comes to this relationship. But make no mistake that the writers did a good job building emotional ties. When Spider-Man was dusted away in Infinity War, it had an effect on many things. And obviously, it had an effect on Tony. Therefore, their reunion in Avengers: Endgame had to be just as impactful. But it was said that the scene almost went quite differently.
Slash Film sat down with a number of folks who worked on the massive Marvel event. Of those people were editor, Jeff Ford. He told Slash that they filmed a version of that scene even before Infinity War was released. But the impact Spider-Man’s “death” had on the fans made them rework Peter and Tony’s reunion scene.
“The first time we shot it, Peter and Tony reunite and Pepper’s nearby, and Tony goes, ‘Uh, Peter, do you know Pepper?” “Nice to meet you!” It’s one of those crazy meet-cutes in the middle of a fight. He hugs him and they have this thing, but it felt very incidental, like they ran into each other at an airport or something. We watched it, and they were both great in the scene, but it was like a comedy scene, so it had this schtick quality to it. By the way, we did not yet know how powerful Peter disappearing was (in Infinity War) when we shot that first version. We had shot it, I think, but we hadn’t tested it, we hadn’t lived with it and actually done the (effect) of (him) going away, so when the audience had that reaction, we’re like, this reunion is different now. It’s a different thing.”
Fans have complained that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has relied too heavily on Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark. Even after he died, Parker spent another movie crying about him. Though, that was the emotional marks that needed to fill a superhuman story with human elements. But now that Stark is gone, and that Peter’s story gets to continue in the MCU, fans are hoping that he can finally acknowledge his fallen Uncle Ben.
That third Spider-Man installment has been announced for July 16th, 2021. Even if this one will focus more on Spider-Man rather than the Avengers, there are many loose ends that need to be tied up. Such as the cliffhanger where his identity was revealed. That story should include JK Simmons’ reprisal as J. Jonah Jameson. Also, there’s the rumor that Charlie Cox might return as Matt Murdock to become Peter’s lawyer. There’s also the matter of Need Leeds becoming Hobgoblin. And there are all those villains that people are hoping to culminate into the Sinister Six.
As far as the reunion scene in question, Avengers: Endgame is on Digital and Blu-Ray now. So you can watch RDJ hug Holland over and over again if you so please. And for further developments on Spider-Man 3, and the other future installments of the MCU, stick with Screen Geek.
