One of the biggest surprise cult classics of the 2000’s has been director Michael Dougherty’s straight-to-video horror hit Trick ‘r Treat. The film has become a mainstay in Halloween decor and celebration since its initial release, and every year since there’s been talks of a sequel or continuation. While a sequel was officially announced several years ago in 2013, there’s been little progress since. Now Michael Dougherty has given an update on the sequel and how he feels about it.
Read on to see his statements on Trick ‘r Treat 2 in an interview with CBM:
“Oh man, it’s that time of year! I feel like that’s become the new Halloween tradition: ask Mike about Trick ‘r Treat 2!” Dougherty shared. “Listen, I’m intrigued by the idea and it’s completely up to Legendary. It’s been a few years since we initially talked about it and there’s been a regime change since then. They still have the property and they love it and there’s still a long line of merchandise and a continuing line of comic books based on the film but the ball is in their court. The moment they say they’re interested and ready to go, we’ll see if the stars align.”
It definitely sounds like a sequel could still work out if the project really is meant to be. But, on the other side of the coin, Dougherty did mention that he may feel it’s better off to simply leave the movie alone.
“At the same time, I think there’s something to be said about not sequelizing it,” the filmmaker pointed out. “In a business that is obsessed with franchising and spinoffs and prequels and sequels, maybe there’s something to be said about just leaving it alone.”
Many fans have been waiting since the release of the first film to get some kind of sequel. There have been a plethora of short films, comics, and other merchandising here or there – but as for a legitimate film continuation, we’ll just have to wait and see.
