Director John Carpenter has proven himself as one of the biggest contributors to the horror genre throughout his career. His films like Halloween and The Thing have made a lasting impact on cinema, and he’s continued to stay active in the field with both composing and producing. Now, while speaking with EW, the director revealed his picks to watch on Halloween. Read on for John Carpenter’s Halloween recommendations!
It turns out this his recommendations for this year are two British horror classics. The two films helped reinvent Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster after Universal first made them popular on the big screen – and seeing John Carpenter give them some love is a great sight.
“Yeah, two moves from the ’50s,” said Carpenter. “The Curse of Frankenstein and the Horror of Dracula. Both Hammer films, and they’re both really fun. They were groundbreaking at the time, they were also extremely violent at the time.”
In fact, the two films were incredibly shocking at the time. Again, audiences had become used to the overall lightheartedness for Universal’s monster movies. When The Curse of Frankenstein and Horror of Dracula were released, critics were horrified by the films. And John Carpenter admits that was the perfect feat.
“Any time you can outrage British critics, you’re doing something right,” said Carpenter himself.
There’s honestly never a bad time to watch some classic Hammer films if you’re a horror fan. But Halloween definitely does sound like a good time to revisit some of the coolest interpretations of Dracula and Dr. Frankenstein. Plus the films themselves have both spawned their own series of great and iconic sequels. Maybe a whole marathon should be in order?
