It’s hard to believe that there’s still a rivalry between Marvel and DC Fans. The way I look at it, if you enjoy comics and their movies, then you fit right in with an encompassing community. And with comic book movies taking Hollywood by storm, that’s a big community. Hell, there’s probably a bigger rivalry between Sony and Disney fans nowadays. In any case, James Gunn, who’s helmed films for both of the Big Two, addressed such rivalry. And he calls for unity between those Marvel and DC fans.
Gunn posted to his Instagram a gift from his family at Marvel upon embarking on his new venture at DC.
“Starting production on #TheSuicideSquad, I received perhaps the coolest and sweetest start-of-production gift ever, along with a note of how excited they are for the movie from Kevin, Lou, Victoria, Mary and Jonathan at @marvelstudios. They made me this incredible scrapbook of our journey so far on #GuardiansoftheGalaxy. It’s a thick tome packed with memories that brought a tear to my eye.”
Furthermore, he called for unity between fans of Marvel and DC.
“As I’ve said so many times, at the end of the day, Marvel and DC fans have a lot more in common than they do not. I am now and have been for almost all my life, both. Maybe you like one more than the other – that’s cool – but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them all or that you have to tear the other down. I know that I and my partners at both Marvel and DC believe that what’s good for one studio is generally good for all: spurring each other on daily with heartfelt, spectacular, and innovative entertainment that keeps audiences around the world loving movies based on or inspired by sequential art. Let’s go, team(s).”
Gunn has started shooting The Suicide Squad. This will be his first picture for DC. But rumors say that he’s been invited to co-helm a reboot of the DCEU along with J.J. Abrams. But he still has unfinished business with Marvel on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Once upon a time, he was wanted to shape the cosmic side of the MCU. So we’ll see what happens after these two movies.
One thing’s for sure, if you enjoy comics, you should be excited about both of these features.
The Suicide Squad is expected on August 6th, 2021. After Gunn wraps production, hopefully, we’ll hear when we can expect Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Thor rode off with the crew of The Milano at the end of Avengers: Endgame. So hopefully, we’ll see the god of thunder in Gunn’s film. In the meantime, Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord is rumored to cameo in Thor: Love and Thunder. For everything else Marvel and DC, stay tuned to Screen Geek.
