Legendary rapper Ice Cube said it best: ‘Today is a good day’. Fans are rejoicing after the surprising news broke that Sony and Disney had worked out a deal to co-release a third Spider-Man film inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After the major cliffhanger that ended the last film, Far From Home, and the subsequent split between the two companies over the Wall Crawler, fans were unsure, at best, what direction Sony was going to take the character in. Now, those fears are gone, and the future looks bright. So bright, it looks like the two film studios are trying to lock in a key piece for the third film.
ComicBook has learned that Jon Watts, director of the first two solo Spidey/MCU films, is in the process of finalizing deal to return and direct the third film. This is even more exciting news, as it all but guarantees that the original vision that has been the connecting thread through the first two films, as well as Peter’s time in the MCU films, will come to fruition. Watts has a clear idea of how exactly to bring Spidey’s story to the big screen, and has arguably given us the best film adaptation of Ole Web Head to date. Hopefully this deal gets properly finalized, and quickly, to solidify this amazing and spectacular news (see what I did there? Spidey puns!)
Peter’s life was immediately turned upside down by Mysterio’s final illusion, and fans’ lives were equally devastated by the sudden split between Sony and Disney. Rumors have run rampant over what caused the split, with neither side taking blame. Fans were divided over whose side to take, but now it’s a non issue. The two companies are back working together to give us one more adventure of one of the world’s most iconic characters inside the MCU.
