The highest grossing film of all time, Avengers: Endgame, is jam packed full of amazing and memorable moments. The 3 hour long epic is so full of moments, we still haven’t found every little nuance the film has to offer. But, while it may seem hard to believe, there were some moments that just didn’t make it into the script. The filmmakers had to decide what to put in, and what to leave in ‘negative space’, for fans to infer from context rather than showing it on screen. One of these moments was the wedding of Tony Stark and Pepper Potts as well as Pepper’s pregnancy.
Speaking with Backstory Magazine, writer Christopher Markus spoke on omitting these details visually.
“We wanted to see the long term effects. I don’t think anybody needed to see the proposal and the wedding and the pregnancy of Pepper Potts. What we want to see is that family unit as a functioning whole. I want to see the world depleted by the loss [of the snap]. The time jump allowed us to get to the meat of the matter pretty quickly. We couldn’t go any further, because then you get into a whole CG makeup situation where you’ve got to age people. Five years you can do just looking haggard.”
Not only does this help explain why we didn’t get the minute details such as the wedding, but it also explains why five years was chosen as the time gap after the events of the snap. Had they gone too far, it would have created a CG mess of work far beyond what was already necessary for the film. Any less time, and people wouldn’t have been regulated to this being their reality from here on out.
Regardless, it’s hard to say this film wasn’t done the best way it could have been done, especially considering the success it has achieved.
