HBO has just premiered the first trailer for their upcoming third season of Westworld, titled Westworld Three: The New World. As you can see in the footage, it looks like the plan is to expand the series’ scope and not only reach past the futuristic theme park setting – but also into the “real” world and other time periods as well. We also see the return of actors Ed Harris and Luke Hemsworth, so it definitely sounds like a promising follow-up to the last season.
The series has definitely come a long way from its inaugural season, and even further from previous Westworld works. As much of a fan as I am of the 1973 film, this series has definitely surpassed it in terms of scope. Its respect for characters, settings, and visual effects has brought in an all-new layer of storytelling.
Of course, the thematic faithfulness to Michael Crichton’s original cinematic endeavor continues to make the series an interesting companion to previous works. It’s also a good example of why previous continuations like Futureworld or the original Westworld TV series failed – this new series just takes things to such new levels.
While we continue to wait for the third season of Westworld, we can only hope that television networks continue to take cues from HBO and push the boundaries of what’s available.
There’s no reason for television to be more watered down than film – and while that’s more popularly understood these days, there’s still very few shows that live up to the quality of an HBO production.
