It might just be time for a culling of the herd. A new ‘event’ on Facebook now has nearly 900,000 people ‘going’, and another 780,000 ‘interested’ in what would surely be their impending doom. A group is calling for a storming of Area 51, to find out exactly what’s going on there. As the name of the event implies, Storm Area 51, they believe in strength in numbers, as ‘They Can’t Stop All Of Us’. And, while this may have started a joke, enough people have signed up to warrant a response from the United States Air Force.
Now, surely this event was posted as a joke. It has to be, right? But, you have to consider that at least 10% of the people who have signed up to either go, or at least interested, are taking this seriously. Many people don’t get sarcasm or humor. So, if that’s the case, than around 150,000 people will show up on September 20th, the day of the event, to actually storm the base. It is enough that the Air Force has responded. A.F. Spokesperson, Laura McAndrews, has released a statement (as reported by Yahoo).
“[Area 51] is an open training range for the US Air Force, and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces. The US Air Force always stands ready to protect America and its assets.”
So, in other words, as all the big, red signs around the base say, ‘TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT’. And, as a veteran myself, I can tell you that they mean it. It’s one thing for a couple people to try and sneak a peek. The guards would descend on you quickly, and just make you leave (albeit at gunpoint). But, a massive group of people trying to storm the gate? It’s definitely a shoot first situation. No warnings, just bullets. And, while I’m not one for killing anyone for no reason, the only people that would actually attempt this aren’t exactly the brightest crayons in the box, right? So, maybe it would be for the betterment of society if some of the ‘less than intelligent’ people were wiped out because they decided to attack a military base…
I’m joking, of course, just as this event is meant to be. Hopefully, this can be quelled before anyone actually does end up trying to storm the base and gets shot in the process. So, until then, let’s all enjoy the craziness that is the ‘Storm Area 51’ event and all the memes coming along. Besides, even if the storming was successful, the aliens were moved to Area 52 long, long ago…
