The DCEU continues to grow despite the constant changes in Warner Bros.’ superhero movie output. Next year will see the release of director Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, a movie which will bring Margot Robbie back as Harley Quinn after the events of Suicide Squad. She’ll be joined by cast members Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress.
And to give the film a stellar villain of its own, Ewan McGregor has been cast as Black Mask – and word is he’s the best villain in the DCEU yet. In fact, there’s praise that he’s now one of the best supervillains in general.
The statement comes from SuperBroMovies writer Daniel Richtman:
“I hear Black Mask in Birds of Prey is “A great, GREAT villain. The best in the DCEU so far and one of the best villains in a superhero movie ever” so that’s good!”

Ewan McGregor has always been considered a great actor, even in the otherwise usually panned Star Wars prequels. And he’s actually one of the most anticipated parts in Doctor Sleep – the upcoming sequel to Stephen King’s The Shining! As such, it seems like a good time for the actor to break free of his Star Wars mold and give us all new faces to recognize him for.
The rest of the film’s cast includes Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya along with Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Vixen, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, and Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz. Charlene Amoia also stars as Maria Bertinelli, along with Talon Reid, Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, François Chau, Matthew Willig, Robert Catrini, and Ali Wong.
In Birds of Prey…
Harley Quinn, Huntress and Black Canary battle crime kingpin Black Mask in Gotham City.
Birds of Prey will hit theaters early next year on February 7, 2020.
