Ever since the Disney/Fox merger, speculation has run rampant as to when the X-Men will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And, while many fans would like to just ignore the sheer existence of the FoX-Men Franchise, there is one character that everyone wants to see return with his original actor in tow; Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The Guinness World Record holder (along side Patrick Stewart) for his 17 year run as the same character, Jackman truly embodied the role as the feral Canuck with claws. Now, the latest rumor says he may be brought back to don the claws again.
We Got This Covered is claiming a source has told them that Marvel is actively pursuing Jackman to return to the role. Jackman has previously stated that the only way he’d go back to the character is if it was in the MCU. But, there’s a problem with this rumor, or more accurately, a few. You see, Hugh Jackman is currently 51 years old (as of this October).
And, Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, has stated that we are at least 5 years away from the mutants from joining the fray. This puts Jackman in his upper 50’s, nearing 60. And, if you look at the rigors the role required on Jackman’s body, it’s simply not worth it for him to return. And, Marvel always plays the long game, so could Jackman really play the character for another 10 years?
There’s another problem. Whilst fans would love to see Jackman back in the role he made iconic, his appearance would stand out aggressively against a brand new cast playing the same characters he interacted with before. This also stops another actor from trying out the role and taking in a new direction. Marvel hasn’t failed us yet with their casting choices, even when they seem strange at first (take the backlash from Chris Evans being cast as Captain America, and now it seems that no one could ever play the role better).
While it feels like Jackman made his shoes impossible to fill, Marvel has the opportunity to do the character differently, rather than mimicking what has already come.
Fans should have all the confidence in the world in Marvel and their choices. They know what they’re doing, and they will handle this legendary character perfectly. Whomever they cast as Wolverine, people should rest assured that they will handle the beloved character and join the pantheon of MCU greatness.
